Remodel Lighting Design: Where Your Lights Should Go
You can choose beautiful cabinets, tile, and countertops. However, if the lights land in the wrong places, the finished room can still feel uncomfortable. Your countertop might sit in shadow. The bathroom mirror might make it difficult to get ready. Or a ceiling light might reflect directly onto your television. Good remodel lighting design starts with how you use the room. Then, it coordinates the lighting with the finishes, furniture, and layout. If you are planning an addition, bathroom remodel, or home renovation in Fresno or Clovis, here is what to consider before approving your electrical plan. Plan the Room Before You Place the Lights An evenly spaced row of recessed lights can look clean on a drawing. But a neat ceiling layout does not automatically put light where you need it. Start with the finished room. Where will your kitchen island sit? Where will you stand at the vanity? Which wall will hold the television? Where will you read or prepare meals? These details should guide the lighting locations. For example, pendant lights should relate to the island below them. If the island moves during design, review the electrical box locations before installation. The ceiling plan should support the room underneath it. https://youtube.com/shorts/R-oAelN8Ct8?feature=share Understand the Three Layers of Lighting A thoughtful lighting plan uses different sources for different purposes. The U.S. Department of Energy identifies three main lighting layers: ambient, task, and accent lighting. www1.eere.energy.gov Lighting typePurposeResidential exampleAmbient lightingProvides general light throughout a roomRecessed ceiling lightsTask lightingIlluminates a specific activityUnder-cabinet lighting over a kitchen counterAccent lightingHighlights a feature or detailLighting directed toward artwork or shelving These layers let you adjust the room for different activities. For instance, you might use brighter lighting while preparing dinner. Later, you might use pendants or accent lights for a softer setting. Instead of asking only how many lights you need, ask what each light should accomplish. Kitchen Lighting: Keep Your Work Surfaces in Mind Kitchen lighting should follow the cabinet layout, countertop locations, and work areas. Avoid putting the light behind you When a light sits behind your body, you can cast a shadow across the counter where you are working. Review recessed-light locations with the cabinet plan in view. Also, consider under-cabinet lighting to illuminate preparation areas beneath upper cabinets. The goal is to make the work surface easier to use. Coordinate pendants with the island Before setting electrical boxes, confirm the island’s final size and location. Then review the pendant dimensions, ceiling height, seating, and sightlines together. A fixture should fit the space without blocking views or feeling crowded. Do not rely on the ceiling’s centerline alone. Look for glare and reflections Polished stone and glossy finishes can reflect light sources. Consider how the lighting will look from both standing and seated positions. A comfortable kitchen needs useful illumination without distracting glare. Bathroom Lighting: Light Your Face, Not Just the Floor A bathroom can feel bright overall while the mirror area still feels shadowy. That is why vanity lighting deserves its own review. Coordinate the mirror, sink locations, and fixtures before electrical installation. Depending on the design, lights beside the mirror can help balance facial illumination. Before approving the layout, confirm: Vanity width and sink centerlines. Mirror dimensions and mounting location. Light fixture size. Nearby cabinet doors and clearances. Also, plan shower lighting separately. Have the electrical professional confirm that the selected fixture suits its location and exposure to moisture. A well-planned bathroom should support getting ready, cleaning, and relaxing—not simply provide one bright setting. Room Additions: Decide How the Space Will Function A new room gives you an opportunity to plan electrical around its intended use. However, that becomes harder if furniture and activities remain undefined. For a bedroom addition, consider the bed location, bedside lighting, and switches near the entrance. For a home office, think about the desk, computer screens, and task lighting. Ask yourself: Where will the largest furniture pieces go? Which activities need focused light? Where will I enter and leave the room? Which lights should operate independently? Where will outlets be useful? Making these decisions early helps coordinate lighting, switches, and outlets with the finished space. Living Areas: Think About Where You Sit Living rooms need lighting for several activities, including reading, conversation, and watching television. A recessed light directly above a seat may feel uncomfortable. Meanwhile, a poorly placed light can create reflections on a screen. Start with the seating arrangement. Then identify where general lighting, reading lights, or accent lighting would help. You do not need every part of the room equally bright. Instead, aim for a comfortable balance that supports how your household uses the space. How Far Apart Should Recessed Lights Be? There is no single spacing measurement that works for every remodel lighting design. The right layout depends on several factors: Ceiling height. Fixture brightness and beam spread. Room size. Cabinet and furniture locations. Surface colors and finishes. Available daylight. Two recessed fixtures with the same visible diameter can distribute light differently. For that reason, select the fixture and review its specifications before finalizing spacing. A general rule can help start the conversation, but it should not replace a room-specific plan. Review Light Color and Dimmers Together Lighting placement is only part of the result. The light itself also affects how you experience your paint, tile, cabinetry, and countertops. Compare finish samples under the proposed lighting whenever possible. This helps you judge the combination before installation. Next, discuss controls. You may want kitchen pendants, recessed lights, and under-cabinet lighting on separate controls. In a bathroom, you may prefer independent control of vanity and general lighting. If you want dimmers, confirm compatibility with the selected fixtures before purchasing. A useful lighting plan gives you control over how the room feels throughout the day. Walk Through the Electrical Layout Before the Walls Close Before drywall covers the wiring, review the proposed locations with your contractor and electrical professional. Use the latest cabinet, vanity, and furniture layouts during the walkthrough. Check fixture centers, […]
Planning a Room Addition in Fresno? Start With These 5 Questions
Planning a room addition starts with knowing what your home needs to do better. Maybe your family needs another bedroom. You want a quiet office. Or you’re thinking about making space for a parent. Before choosing finishes or drawing out walls, answer these five questions. They’ll help you explain your goals and start a more useful conversation with a contractor. 1. What Problem Should the Addition Solve? “I need more space” is a starting point. Get specific about what that space should change. Do your children need separate rooms? Are you taking work calls at the kitchen table? Does your living room feel crowded whenever family visits? Write down your biggest frustration with the house today. Then describe what daily life should look like after the addition. That becomes the purpose behind your project. 2. How Will the New Room Connect to Your Home? A new room affects the rooms around it. Think about how you’ll enter the addition, where furniture will go, and whether the layout gives everyone enough privacy. Also, consider how the new space could affect natural light in existing rooms. For example, an extra bedroom should have a practical path to a bathroom. A larger living area should make gathering easier without creating an awkward walkway. The goal is a home that works better as a whole. 3. What Budget Are You Comfortable Exploring? When planning a room addition, discuss your budget early. Size is only one part of the scope. Structural work, plumbing, electrical work, and finish selections can also affect the cost. Start with two lists: Must-haves: The features that solve your main problem. Preferences: The features you would like to consider if the budget allows. This helps you explain your priorities. It also gives the design conversation a clearer direction. 4. What Needs to Be Evaluated Before Building? An idea that looks simple on paper still needs a closer look. Your existing structure, available property space, and applicable building requirements can influence the design. Connections between the existing house and the addition also need careful planning. Before committing to a layout, ask your contractor what needs to be evaluated and which questions remain unanswered. Understanding those steps helps you make informed decisions as the project develops. 5. What Should You Bring to the First Conversation? You don’t need a finished set of plans to explain what you want. Start with: A few photos of your existing home. A description of the room you want to add. Your main reason for adding it. A budget range you’re comfortable discussing. Any timing needs that could affect the project. Inspiration photos can help, too. However, explain what you like about each one—the light, the layout, or the way the space feels. That information is more useful than simply asking for something that looks similar. Room Additions in Fresno: More Space for the Home You Love
https://youtube.com/shorts/J4AmdsuXYHA?si=PKAF3TZ-TA4uG9pz Considering room additions in Fresno? If your home feels crowded but you love your neighborhood, an addition could help you create the space your family needs. Maybe you need another bedroom, a private home office, or more room to gather. Whatever the reason, start with one question: What would make your home work better for you? At 7th Heaven Construction, we serve homeowners in Fresno and Clovis with residential design-build services. Planning Room Additions in Fresno Before choosing a room size or layout, identify the problem you want to solve. For example, an extra bedroom might give your children more privacy. A larger living area could make family gatherings more comfortable. Meanwhile, a dedicated office could give you a quieter place to work. Consider these questions: Who will use the new space? What activities should it support? How should it connect to the existing house? What budget do you want to plan around? Clear answers help guide the design conversation. They also help you focus on useful space instead of square footage alone. Make the New Space Feel Connected A well-planned addition should feel like a natural part of your home. The layout matters, but so do the roofline, windows, exterior finishes, and natural light. Together, these details influence how the addition looks and feels. For instance, a new bedroom needs more than enough room for a bed. You also want to consider storage, privacy, and access to the rest of the house. Similarly, a larger family room should improve how people move through your home. Adding space should make daily life easier. What Affects the Cost of a Room Addition? Room additions in Fresno vary in scope, so a useful budget starts with the details of your home and your goals. The size of the addition, structural work, finish selections, and any plumbing or electrical work can influence the overall cost. Therefore, start by defining your priorities. Separate the features you need from the features you would like to explore. This gives your design-build conversation a clearer starting point. Bring Your Ideas Into the Conversation You do not need every design decision settled before discussing an addition. Start with photos of your home, a few inspiration images, and a short list of what feels missing. Then, explain how you want to use the new room. You can also watch this short video and share the questions it brings up about your own project. Fresno Room Additions: What to Know Before Extending Your Home
https://youtube.com/shorts/cOg7tl8_PIw?si=lIM3xP8u0VWyvJFF Planning Fresno room additions? A home extension can give you space for a bedroom, home office, or larger living area. However, a useful addition starts with a clear plan for how you want to use that space. Before choosing a room size, consider what your current home lacks. Do you need privacy, room for family, or a better layout? At 7th Heaven Construction, we help homeowners in Fresno and Clovis plan residential design-build projects. Start by discussing your goals, budget, and existing home so the next step fits your project. Ready to discuss your addition? Call (559) 245-2766 or send us your project details. Should You Add a Room or Change Your Existing Layout? First, identify the problem you want to solve. A cramped bedroom may call for more space. Meanwhile, an awkward living area may benefit from a different layout within the home. Ask yourself: What activity does our current home make difficult? Who will use the new space? Do we need an extra room or a larger existing room? How should the addition connect to the rest of the house? These answers help define the project before you commit to a floor plan. They also keep the conversation focused on your daily life rather than square footage alone. Home Extension Ideas to Discuss An Extra Bedroom An additional bedroom may provide space for family or guests. Think about privacy, storage, and the route to the nearest bathroom. For example, would the new room work better near the other bedrooms or away from the main living area? Start with that question before choosing its dimensions. A Larger Primary Suite If your bedroom feels crowded, discuss whether you want more sleeping space, a larger closet, or a connected bathroom. Each goal changes the scope. Deciding what matters most helps you compare options without adding features you do not need. A Dedicated Home Office Working at the kitchen table can make it hard to separate work from home life. A dedicated office creates a place for your desk, storage, and daily routine. Also, consider noise and privacy. The location of the office may matter as much as its size. A Larger Living Area A home extension can create more room for gathering. However, the connection to the existing house deserves careful attention. Think about furniture placement, walking paths, and access to the backyard. The goal is a space that feels connected to the way you already live. What Affects the Scope of Fresno Room Additions? Two additions with the same dimensions can involve different work. Use the following topics to guide your discussion with a contractor: The proposed location and connection to the house. The existing roof, walls, and floor conditions. Whether the space includes a bathroom or other plumbing. Heating, cooling, lighting, and electrical needs. Plans, approvals, and site-specific requirements. Interior finishes and work within the existing home. Ask which items the proposal includes and which need further review. A clear scope makes estimates easier to compare. What Should You Budget for a Home Addition? Start with a budget range you are comfortable discussing. Then explain what that budget needs to accomplish. For instance, an extra bedroom and a bedroom with a new bathroom are different projects. Likewise, extending a room may involve changes to the existing home beyond the new space itself. Instead of comparing only the final price, compare the work behind it. Ask each contractor to explain the included scope, exclusions, and allowances. That conversation helps you understand what you are buying and what decisions remain open. What to Prepare Before Calling a Contractor You do not need every finish selected to start a conversation. Bring a short outline of what you want: Your location in Fresno or Clovis. The room you want to add or expand. Your approximate size goal, if you have one. Your budget range. Photos of the existing home and proposed addition area. Any plans or sketches you already have. Also, mention whether you expect to live in the home during construction. Ask how the proposed work could affect access and daily routines. You can review our home remodeling process before reaching out. How to Choose a Contractor for Your Home Extension Choose a team that can explain how your project moves from an idea to a defined scope. Ask who handles design coordination, how decisions get documented, and how changes affect the proposal. Also, verify the contractor’s license through the California Contractors State License Board. Photos can show finished work. A clear project discussion helps you understand how the team will approach your home. Room Addition FAQs Do I need finished plans before calling? You can contact us to discuss your goals before you have finished plans. Let us know what you already have so we can discuss the appropriate next step. Can you tell me the price from square footage alone? Square footage is a starting point for the conversation. The location, existing conditions, proposed features, and included work also need review before defining a project price. Can I add a bathroom with the new room? Include that goal in your initial discussion. A bathroom adds another set of design, plumbing, and finish decisions to review as part of the proposed scope. What if I am unsure how much space I need? Start with the purpose of the room. Describe who will use it, what furniture it needs, and what feels missing in your current home. Those details help guide the layout conversation. What Is a Curbless Shower?
https://youtube.com/shorts/lIvpGQks7PY?si=cVQmWKixzJek3jpO A curbless shower has no raised curb to step over at the entrance. Instead, the bathroom floor transitions into the shower area. That open entry can create a clean look and remove a step from your daily routine. However, the shower still needs a sloped floor that directs water toward the drain. The entrance may look simple. The preparation underneath makes that transition possible. Why Curbless Shower Preparation Matters Removing the old curb does not automatically create a working curbless shower. The installer must account for the space the shower base, waterproofing, setting materials, and tile will occupy. Without that planning, the finished shower floor may sit higher than the bathroom floor. Therefore, check the floor assembly before committing to a flush entrance. Manufacturer guidance explains how floor recessing, drainage, slope, and waterproofing work together. You can explore those principles in this curbless shower planning guide from Schluter. This is general background; your installation must follow the requirements for the system selected for your project. What to Review Before Construction 1. Existing Floor Conditions First, identify the floor structure and the available space beneath the shower. A concrete slab and a framed floor can require different approaches. Some conditions may only become clear after demolition. For that reason, ask what the contractor can confirm now and what still needs inspection. 2. Finished Floor Height Next, compare the planned shower floor with the surrounding bathroom floor. Include every layer of the finished assembly in that discussion. Where the structure permits, recessing the shower floor can make room for the sloped base. The plan must preserve the floor’s structural integrity. 3. Drainage and Water Control The shower needs a slope toward the drain. Meanwhile, the layout should account for where water lands and how the entry connects to the rest of the bathroom. Discuss the drain location, showerhead position, and glass layout together. Those decisions affect more than appearance. 4. Waterproofing Details The waterproofing plan needs to address the shower base, wall connections, drain connection, and other areas exposed to water. Follow the selected manufacturer’s instructions for those connections. Also, confirm the required testing and inspection steps before covering the assembly with tile. Watch Our Curbless Shower Preparation Video Our short video introduces the preparation stage of a curbless shower project. Watch: Preparation for a Curbless Shower Use it as a starting point for your own project questions. A short clip shows one stage; it does not establish whether your bathroom has the same conditions. For more design ideas, explore our Fresno bathroom remodel project. Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Curbless Shower Bring these questions to your project discussion: Can my existing floor support a flush shower entrance? What conditions will demolition help confirm? Will the design require changes to the surrounding bathroom floor? How will the drain, slope, and waterproofing work together? What is the alternative if a flush entrance is not practical? These questions help define the scope before you make final selections. You can also review our home remodeling process to understand how a project moves forward. Curbless Shower FAQs Can every bathroom have a curbless shower? Feasibility depends on the existing floor, available depth, plumbing, and planned layout. An on-site review helps identify those limits. Sometimes demolition is necessary to confirm the final approach. Does a curbless shower mean water will escape? A curbless entrance changes how the design controls water. Proper slope, drainage, waterproofing, and splash-control planning all matter. Review those details together rather than choosing the entrance by appearance alone. Can you price the project from a photo? Photos help communicate your goals, but they do not show every condition beneath the floor. A useful scope should identify the proposed work and any conditions that still need confirmation. Planning a Curbless Shower in Fresno or Clovis? Shower Pan Waterproofing: What Fresno and Clovis Homeowners Should Know
https://youtube.com/shorts/M8oVmXAENLU?si=HrjsqVMZYIjgw0Ub Shower pan waterproofing helps protect your bathroom beneath the tile. If you’re planning a shower remodel in Fresno or Clovis, start here. The shower pan waterproofing system helps keep water inside the shower and direct it toward the drain. Therefore, it deserves attention before you choose your finishes. Tile gives your shower its finished look. However, the waterproofing underneath does the work you cannot see. At 7th Heaven Construction, we help Fresno and Clovis homeowners plan residential bathroom remodels. Here are the key shower pan waterproofing steps to discuss before your project moves forward. Planning a shower remodel? Send us photos of your current shower, your city, and what you want to change. Let’s discuss your project. Watch: Shower Pan Waterproofing Watch the shower pan video on YouTube What Is Shower Pan Waterproofing? The shower pan is the base of your shower. Its waterproofing connects with the drain and surrounding waterproofing details to manage water beneath the finished surface. Two common approaches are a traditional liner beneath a mortar bed and a bonded waterproofing system closer to the tile surface. However, these use different installation details. The pan, drain, and wall connections need to follow the chosen system’s instructions. The Key Shower Pan Waterproofing Steps 1. Check the Base and Plan the Drain First, the installer checks the supporting base and plans the drain connection. Damage, movement, or an unsuitable surface needs attention before it gets covered. Also, discuss the shower size and whether you want a curb or a curbless entry. Those choices affect the base and drainage plan. 2. Create the Required Slope Next, the waterproofing assembly needs a path that directs water toward the drain. In a traditional liner shower, the liner sits over a pre-sloped base. A bonded system may use a sloped mortar base or a compatible prefabricated tray. Follow the selected system’s requirements rather than treating every shower pan the same. 3. Install the Shower Pan Waterproofing Then, the installer fits the waterproofing material and completes its connection to the drain. Traditional liners and bonded membranes have different fastening, bonding, and sealing requirements. Therefore, choose products and accessories that work with the selected assembly. 4. Complete Corners, Curbs, and Wall Connections Also, waterproofing needs continuity at changes in direction and where components meet. Corners, the shower entry, and the pan-to-wall connection all need the details specified by the manufacturer. Waterproof wall panels alone do not complete the shower base waterproofing. 5. Test the Shower Pan Waterproofing A flood test checks whether the completed waterproofing assembly holds water before tile covers it. First, the installer allows the required curing time and plugs the drain appropriately. Then, they follow the system instructions and applicable inspection requirements for the test. If a leak appears, they repair it and test again before proceeding. Ask your contractor: “When will the shower pan be tested, and can I see the results before it is covered?” 6. Complete the Assembly and Install Tile After a successful test, the remaining work depends on the waterproofing system. A traditional liner assembly includes a mortar bed above the liner; a bonded system follows its own tile installation sequence. Finally, protect the completed waterproofing while finishing the shower. Questions to Ask Your Shower Remodeling Contractor Which waterproofing system are you using? How will the pan connect to the drain and walls? How will you waterproof the curb or curbless entry? When will you perform the flood test? What happens if the test reveals a leak? As a result, clear answers help you understand the scope before construction starts. Shower Pan Waterproofing FAQs Can tile and grout replace shower waterproofing? No. A tiled shower still needs a suitable waterproofing assembly beneath its finishes. Does a curbless shower need waterproofing? Yes. Removing the curb changes the entry detail; it does not remove the need for waterproofing. Feasibility depends on the existing structure, drain layout, and planned assembly. How much does shower pan waterproofing cost? Pricing depends on the shower size, existing conditions, drain work, and selected system. Therefore, an estimate needs to account for your shower and the full remodel scope. Ready to Plan Your Shower Remodel in Fresno or Clovis? Bathroom Remodel Cost in Fresno: What Affects the Price?
Bathroom remodel cost in Fresno depends on what you want to change and what your existing bathroom needs. Replacing a vanity and fixtures is a different project from rebuilding a shower or moving plumbing. Here’s how to think through your scope before you request a proposal. What affects bathroom remodel cost in Fresno? The scope of work First, decide whether you want a partial update or a full remodel. A partial update might include a new vanity, sink, faucet, mirror, lighting, or outlet. A full remodel may also include the shower, flooring, plumbing, drywall, and other finishes. The more you change, the more work the proposal needs to cover. If you’re still deciding, see how we approach bathroom remodeling in Fresno. The bathroom layout Keeping the shower, toilet, and vanity in place gives us a clearer starting point. Moving fixtures changes the work behind the finished surfaces. Tell us about any layout changes early so we can price the project you actually want. The shower Shower size, tile, glass, fixtures, and waterproofing details can have a major effect on the scope. Two bathrooms of the same size can need very different budgets if one includes a custom shower and the other does not. Existing conditions Demolition can reveal work that was hidden behind the walls or under the floor. We look at the bathroom’s current condition when developing the scope and explain what the proposal includes. Your finish selections The vanity, countertop, tile, lighting, and plumbing fixtures all shape the finished room. Decide which features matter most to you. That gives us a useful starting point for discussing the design and budget. Should you update part of the bathroom or remodel the whole room? A partial update may make sense if the layout and shower still work well for you. You can focus on the features you use and see every day. A full remodel may be the better fit if the shower needs replacement, the layout does not work, or you want the finishes to feel consistent throughout the room. The right choice depends on the result you want, not just the room’s size. Does a Fresno bathroom remodel need a permit? Permit requirements depend on the work and the property’s jurisdiction. The City of Fresno provides residential project guidance and a Building Permit Center where homeowners can check requirements. www.fresno.gov Get a price for your bathroom Send us photos of your bathroom and tell us what you want to change. Let us know if you plan to move any fixtures and which finishes you have in mind. Contact 7th Heaven Construction to discuss your Fresno or Clovis bathroom project. Electrical Outlet Installation Backsplash Fix in Fresno
https://youtube.com/shorts/380pltdYV6M?si=LBskOoUKqY1C11vC Electrical outlet installation backsplash work can become much more difficult once the tile is already installed. On this project, the backsplash was already in place when we needed to complete an electrical outlet installation. That meant the work had to be handled carefully to avoid damaging the finished tile while still creating a clean, safe outlet location. Electrical Outlet Installation Backsplash Work After Tile Ideally, outlet locations are finalized before backsplash installation. However, remodeling projects sometimes require field adjustments. In this case, Ricky handled the electrical correction after the backsplash had already been completed. The goal was simple: Protect the surrounding backsplash Create the proper outlet opening Complete the electrical work correctly Leave the area clean Avoid unnecessary tile damage This type of situation is exactly why proper trade coordination matters during a kitchen remodel. Why Electrical Planning Matters During a Kitchen Remodel Electrical work should be coordinated with cabinets, countertops, appliances, and backsplash installation. Once tile is installed, moving or adding an outlet can become more difficult. That does not mean it cannot be done. It means the contractor and electrician need to approach the work carefully. An electrical outlet installation backsplash correction should be completed with the finished surfaces in mind. Watch Ricky Handle the Electrical Fix Ricky stepped in to complete the outlet installation after the backsplash was already finished.
